Omnitracs, LLC is the leading provider of fleet management software applications, information services, and hardware platforms for the transportation industry.

Location:
Dallas, Texas
My Role:
2018 Summer User Experience Intern.
My Work:

My personal work involved building User Journey Maps and designing IFTA Reporting Parts. I worked with the UX team to do the interviews and field study, as well as conducted the brainstorming for Omnitracs One: a comprehensive product for fleets of all shapes and sizes.

Part 1

IFTA Reporting Design

The IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) reporting allows the back office of truck company to manage fuel tax reports and export customizable ones.

Designed as the first application in Omnitracs One, IFTA was a reference for the following application design.

My work: IFTA Reporting Design

Reporting Design
"IFTA was created to simplify the fuel tax reporting system and eliminate the need for separate permits."

To Redesign the IFTA Reporting

Problem

Old system is not compatible with the future application.

Users felt difficult to choose multiple organizations for exporting one report.

Too much information on side menu.

Users want to have separate filter system for each report.

Pervious Interface

Solution

Sync the design language across multiple systems. Build application trust.

Simplify MultiSelect workflow.

Keep the interface simple enough for not technologically-savvy users.

Design separate filter systems for different kinds of report type.

Final Product

The final product enables users to pull information into customizable reporting. Users are able to preview the reports before exporting.

User Research

From Omnitracs employee training, I learned that Omnitracs has four types of users who interact with each other in the fleet management industry. Click to see user roles interaction diagram.

Field Study

Our team visited a manufacturing plant - Acme Brick located in Millsap, TX in June 2018.  I observed truck drivers use Omnitracs App and had conversations with them, and then documented what I heard and saw. The field study helped me understand Omnitracs users, their needs, and the unique context in which they live.

User Journey Map

After gathering data from interviews and field study, I created the user journey map to present what a typical day is like for users. The journey map played an important role in our design stage, especially when we designed the platform to streamline business workflow.

Insights:
  • Messaging is a safety issue

  • Drivers use multiple apps like trucker path to help them on their trips.

  • Drivers spend more time at stop station than driving on the road.

  • Drivers prefer to keep hand-written notes about their appointments.

Who are Omnitracs users?

Part 2

User Research

Our team conducted interviews with Omnitracs users.  I did field study where I interact with truck drivers.

After learning about Omnitracs users, I created user journey maps to inform our design.

Intuitive MultiSelect Workflow

From the user research, we learned that users use multi-select function frequently but they found it complicated to select multiple organizations and view selected ones. We designed an easy way for them.

My Intern Experience

My Intern Experience & Reflection

Challenge

I faced many challenges during my internship, especially organizing information. In the brainstorming sessions, incorporating three platform features into one future platform and designing global navigation were hard. I communicated with people from other departments, listened to their understanding of products and summarized them. I also held a video meeting with Roadnet product team in Baltimore to learn their feedback for the user journey map. This preparation helped me clarify the relationship between features when we started brainstorming.

What I learn

I learned a lot during my internship. From brainstorming, rapid prototyping, responsive web design to agile development, I gained much experience on how UX designer works in the real industry. Many thanks to my co-workers in Omnitracs! I had an excellent experience here and learned a lot! My UX intern experience makes me love UX!
