Problem
Millions of people die each year from diseases that can, in many cases, be prevented (heart disease, diabetes, obesity and certain forms of cancer). In the U.S. alone, $3 trillion a year is being spent on health care, 75% of these costs go toward treating preventable diseases, while only 3% is being spent on preventative initiatives and programs.
Unhealthy has become the new norm. Our sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy diets are literally killing us. It is time to re-code our way of thinking and establish a new HealthCode that promotes health and prevents disease.
About HealthCode
HealthCode is a non-profit organization aiming at empowering people to lead a healthier life and deal with preventable diseases.
HealthCode is holding several year-round outdoor events, engaging people to actively participant individually or in organization through fun collective goals and compete on leaderboards inside companies or across groups.
The right part is the introduction of Million Mile Month( an event held by HealthCode )
Research Goal
The pain points HealthCode is facing mainly focus on two aspects: how to attract more people to participate in the events, and how to increase donation and sponsorship as a non-profit organization.
Based on these concerns, we decided to focus our research and recommendations on four main aspects shown in the following.

Heuristic Evaluation
We look over both the HealthCode website and one of its event website, Milion Mile Month, for heuristic evaluation. We used Jakob Nielsen 10 Usability Heuristics to identify problems in user interface design. Some problems we found and the evaluation key takeaways are shown in the following.
User control and freedom
-
There is no return button on the leaderboard page
-
Users get confused to find ways to switch to other leaderboards without back button and clear directions

Consistency and Standards
-
Inconsistent use of background colors
-
The use of different wording on menu bar for the same feature may confuse user
-
Not all sponsor icons are connected with link.
Aesthetic and minimalist design
-
Too much empty space in the box
-
Too many colors on the same page
